Hungarian Heritage Calendar ~ THE RETURN OF THE HOLY CROWN OF ST. STEPHEN IN RETROSPECT Thirteen years ago this month on January 6th, 1978, the Holy Crown of St. Stephen was returned to Hungary by the Government of the United States. At the time, many Hungarians were understandably upset by this strange decision. Since then, however, some evidence has been found indicating that the controversial return may have been the result of secret negotiations between Washington, Budapest, and the Vatican whereby, in exchange for the return of the Holy Crown of St. Stephen to the Hungarian people and not to the Communist Government of Hungary, Cardinal Joseph Mindszenty would be allowed to leave his sanctuary in the U.S. Embassy in Budapest and go into exile. The timing does fit the available evidence, but the "story-behindthe-story" still awaits corroboration before it can be told in full. IMRE MADACH AND HIS MONUMENTAL "THE TRAGEDY OF MAN" REMEMBERED Imre Madach, the author of the great and enduring, Hungarian drama, "The Tragedy of Man”, was born 168 years ago this month on January 21st, 1823. It was in his work that the hopelessness of individual and national destiny was transformed into the tragedy of all mankind. THE HUNGARIAN POET WHO CAUSED A FUROR WITH HIS WORKS Endre Ady, the Hungarian poet whose works shattered the complacency of the literati in Hungary during his day and age, and scolded Hungary as his "detestable, loveable nation", died 72 years ago this month on January 27, 1919. 20 HUNGARIAN HERITAGE REVIEW JANUARY 1991
