13 From the Editor ■ THE PAST IN RETROSPECT AND THE FUTURE IN HOPE We could write a book about the thick-and-thins, the ups-and-downs, and the merry-go-rounds salted-and-hot peppered with false promises, bad-mouthings, and assorted demonstrations of ill-will that we've been subjected to for no good reason at all ever since this publication first made its appearance in 1985. But, even though there were times when we couldn't help thinking-the-unthinkable and calling it quits once and for all, we didn't. So,here we are embarking upon our 6th year in publication. Several things kept us going in spite of the almost insurmountable problems, disappointments, and back-bitings we've had to cope with. In retrospect, these were increasing interest in our publication and its objectives not only throughout North America, but also in Hungary; the agonizingly slow, but sure, increase in our readership among Americanborn citizens of Hungarian descent even though we have not been able to interest any source of funding to help us launch the kind of advertising campaign the "HHR" deserves; the numerous letters of appreciation and encouragement we've received from our readers; the donations to our "HHR BENEFIT FUND" which really helped us a great deal; and evidence proving that our "message" was beginning to get through to influential sectors never before concerned with or even interested in the Hungarian- American membership in our multi-cultural society. As far as we are concerned, therefore, these even-the-score between the hardships we've experienced, including the reluctance of Hungarian churches, organizations, and clubs to support us, and the progress we've managed to achieve thanks to our Family of Readers! Starting with this issue, we now look forward with hope toward a less trying and a more progressive 6th year in publication. And, if the past is prologue to the future (and it really is), it is a certainty that, with your continued readership and financial support for our "HHR" BENEFIT FUND" during the months ahead, our hopes for the immediate and distant future can be , and will be, realized.
