• HCP^VoX-XXJ3p ecial Number 1968 No 2- 95 -(07799) 8) Our Christian Responsibility in the World of Modern Labour Management a) The Christocentric Interpretation of Work We regird work as one of the most important fields in v«hich our love to God and to our fellowmen is to be put into practice under the motivation of thankfulness to God* For in this field the Christian is to serve his fellowmen not only in an accidental and casual manner but systematically and purposefully» In the centre of the justification by faith, from the angle of the person cf Jesus Christ, we may see in new light all those texts of the Holy Scriptures which speak about werk» Jesus Christ, as the key, norm and basis of our interpretation of the Holy Scriptures, will al^o direct our minds when we begin to interpret the teaching of the Bible about the work cf man» He who alone is authorised to sum up the Law, defined, in the "Great Commandiiient", the task of man as the service of love to God and man. This, of course, is an all-embracing task of which work is only a part, withal decisively important part* As to the purpose of work, Jesus Christ teaches us that we are to serve:, by our werk, the good cf the individual, the family and of air fellowmen, thereby realizing something of the will of God that is governed by his love, Work is the systematic, purposeful and planned realization of the love to man, b the practical implementation cf the Christianas obligation to love his neighbours. This Christocentric interpretation cf work is not an abstract ideal, but the very specific and practical content of the Holy Scriptures, The A- pestle Paul pointed to his own example to show the meaning of Christian faith with regard to the everyday obligations cf life. The Thessalonians were reminded cf his example how he had given expression of Christian faith by his dedicated and untiring work. Faith for him was unshakable trust in God and, at the same time faithfulness in fulfilling the obligations of earthly life. His life was not ocqpartaentalized as though the obligations cf earthly lifo and the work cf the weekdays had nothing to with our faith in Christ, r It is in the name of Jesus Christ that the Apóst le Etui turns against the work-shy and those of disorderly living. This he does because he knows that our everyday work and attitude is to test whether our faith has been enfeebled and our hope dimmed or we have indeed received power from our Lord, b) Work As a Part of God’s Providence Bod o carries on the work of providence also by making use cf human reason and of the work of human hands» The Christian is to consider his own work as a tiny port cf God,s providence caring for the world and for men, At the same time, every well-done work, as the fulfillment of God’s command
