No 4. -6- May, 8, 1949 PROM THE SERMONS OF THE RUSSIEN ORTHODOX CHURCH -Sermon”b v Archbishon of Krim_Tju5:a. on the Anniversary of Liberation - -• The Protestant press of Hungary follows closely tho expressions of neighboring Russian Christianity»frequently publishing first-hand translations from original Russian Church papers* So the April issue of the Reformed Congregation published a Bible study with the title "The Conversion of Peter" from the Bratslcy Vestnvik /Brotherly • Courir/j The Baptist Spiritual Life carried the biographic sketches of several Russian Baptist leaders; the Reformed Church«official organ of the Reformed Church of Hungary, printed the sermon delivered by Archbishop Luka of Krim at the Peast of the Liberation of Krim. Our readers will probably be interested in excepts from this speech,so that they nay 3ee something of the life of the Orthodox Church and inform themselves of the opinion of Russian Orthodoxy on the present world political situation. "We know," said Archbishop Luka, "to what end came the gigantic conquests of Tamerlan,Alexander tho Croat»Napoleon, etc* as well as the not-long-past attempt at world conquest by Hitler, which concerned us closest. But to us Christians the examples of the Bible are the dearest. We recall or reread the story of the uad Nebuchadnezzar, a feared ruler of the world, whom God expelled from the community o~ men because of his pride and arrogance and, growing hair on his body, turned him into an animal. "The Americans and the English are old Bible readers. They know their Bible. And we believe, deeply believe, that the aggressive imperialist plans are far removed from the plain millions of America and Britain...The entire Christian people of the Soviet Union are tearfully praying that the Lord may inspire brotherly love- in our Christian brethren abroad and in all believers in Christ, for they who look upon Christ and accept Kim as Saviour are unable to conceive of and execute such plans. "Por those who, because of their blind hatred of Communism, wish to attack us with the £;tom bomb, I quote the words of the wise Gamaliel, which ho spoke to tho Council of Jews at Jerusalem, who had wanted to kill the apostles: 'Ye men of Israel /I say today, 'Ye Christians of the World,'/»take heed to yourselves what yo intend to do as. touching these men.Por before t'hose days rose up Iheudas, boasting hinselg to bo somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselvos: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered and brought to nought. After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the dfiys of tho taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him were dispersed.Aftd now I say unto you,Refrain from these men,and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work bo of men,it will cone to nought: But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.1 /Acts V: 35-39/
