New structural links will reach across borders to reunify the divided segments of the Hungarian nation. But these links will not be limited to ethnic Hungarians; they will lead to new and strengthened cross-border structures uniting Hungarians and Slovaks, Hungarians and Slovenes, and later Hungarians and Croatians. If such ties between the neighboring nations are created or strengthened, then integration along the principles of Schuman will be fulfilled in the Carpathian Basin. The integration begun more than a half-century ago in the French-German border area will be truly successful in the enlarged European Union if the integration of our dismembered nation is complemented by the association of the peoples of the Carpathian Basin. It is our hope that the European expansion of May 2004 will drive this process forward.
