NEWS OF GENERAL INTEREST Hegyvidék Language School Offers Summer Courses The Hegyvidék Language School in Budapest will offer Hungarian language courses for Hungarians that seek to reconnect with their roots, language and culture. Courses of two and three-week duration will be available in spring and summer, 2001. NOTICE REGARDING THE NEW GERMAN COMPENSATION LAW According to stipulations of the new German law that came into effect on August 12, 2000, all those who worked in forced labor camps in Germany, or in territories under German occupation during the National Socialist regime, and were alive on the date of the creation of this fund, that is, up until February 16, 1999 may apply for compensation. If the applicant passed away after February 16, 1999 the immediate relatives, that is, the spouse and children, are eligible to apply for compensation. The provisions of this German law exclude those who were prisoners of war. All those who who became permanent residents of Hungary as of February 16, 1999, are not of Jewish ancestry and during World War II performed forced labor in Germany or in German occupied territories should apply as soon as possible at the Hungarian branch of the Office of International Migration in Budapest. The Office of International Migration (IOM) processes compensation applications free of charge. Those who are elegible may receive compensation up to 15,000 German marks. The deadline for applications is August 11, 2001. IN MEMÓRIÁM Sándor Taraszovics (1931 - 2000) Sándor Taraszovics, co-founder of the Hungarian American Coalition, died of heart failure on Decmber 22, 2000, in his native Nyíregyháza, Hungary. He actively participated in the 1956 Hungarian Revolution as an Army communication specialist, and also served on the Revolutionary Council in Budapest. After fleeing Hungary in 1956, he settled in Washington, where he made valuable contributions to many Hungarian American organizations. He was a beloved mentor, generous host, and true friend. His gentle humor and abiding faith in the goodness of man will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate to know him. Károly Fenyvesi, a good friend and "földi" of Tara, delivered the following farewell at the Dec. 25th Hungarian Christmas Service in Washington, DC: Taraszovics Sándor, Nyíregyházán született és ott is halt meg. Talán kívánsága szerint, mivel gondolatban soha nem volt távol a Nyírségtől. Ezen a vidéken mindig sokan születtek ábrándozónak akik nyitott szemmel is álmodtak. Az újvilág korlátlan lehetőségei nem csábították Sándort. Az amerikai fővárosban is megmaradt az 1956 forradalom hű katonájának. De ugyanakkor türelmesen szerette honfitársait és a jó szemét is odaadta volna ha a volt magyar ellenzék tagjai egyszer együtt masíroznának a demokrácia zászlaja alatt. Sándor, szenvedélyes vendéglátó volt és házában mindenki otthon érezhette magát. Ha néha csalódott is vendégeiben, nem mutatta. Makacsul hitt az emberben, a jó magyarban, és a jó győzelmében. Ugyan elvesztettünk egy igaz barátot, Sándor megmaradt nekünk, felejthetetlen emléknek. Isten Veled, tiszta lélek. 6 • Hungarian American Coalition • February 2001
