On Saturday, March 11th, the Museum together with Honorary Consul László Bojtos, the Hungarian Communion of Friends, and the Hungarian American Coalition hosted Hungarian Minister of Education and Culture, Mr. Zoltán Pokorni, for a conversation with the Cleveland Hungarian community. 25th Annual Meeting of the AMERICAN HUNGARIAN EDUCA TORS ASSOCIA TION "Hungarians in North America and Abroad" May 24-27, 2000 Call for Papers: A variety of topics may be explored which touch on Hungarians and Hungarian achievements outside of Hungary as well as any aspect of Hungarian life outside the current borders of the country. Papers can be in any discipline and will be organized into the following panels: HISTORY, LITERATURE, FOLKLORE, THE ARTS, SCIENCE AND SOCIAL SCIENCES. Comparative and interdisciplinary papers are encouraged. Anyone wishing to propose a panel should contact Peter Pastor or Enikő M. Basa PLACE: BUDAPEST, HUNGARY. Chevy Chase, MD 20815 eniko@ex-pressnet.com Major Changes at The Bethlen Home After many years of service at the Bethlen Home, Rev. Paul Kovács and his wife Edit retired in 1999. The new Executive Director is Rev. Imre A. Bertalan, Jr., and the newly appointed administrator will be Michael Walker. Changes planned for the Bethlen Home include the construction of a new building that will offer the most modern facilities for its residents, including an Assisted Living section. The present building will be refurbished so it can accommodate Hungarian activities, meetings, youth camps, and eventually serve as a Hungarian Center. The Magyar Club of Chicago The traditional January 29th Annual Gala Ball, organized by the Magyar Club of Chicago, was an elegant and very successful event attended by 861 people. Funds from the proceeds of the Gala Ball as well as by individual donations enables the Magyar Club of Chicago to award seven college scholarships: one for $1,500, one for $1,000, and five scholarships of $500 each to Chicago-area Hungarian American students active in the community. Honored guests at the Ball included Ambassador Dr. László Molnár, the Consul General from New York, his wife, Dr. Katalin Doby, and a representative of Illinois Governor, George H. Ryan, who presented President Paul Varga a special commendation in recognition of 23 years of leadership in promoting Hungarian culture and education in the Chicago area. On March 25, 2000, the Magyar Club of Chicago will hold its Annual Meeting and Election of Officers. MBK - Magyar Baratt Közösség Reménység Bal - Hope Gala Ball Not even a weekend snowstorm could keep 160 guests away from the Fifth Reménység Bal held on February 19, 2000, in New Jersey.
