COALITION PROJECT UPDATES: Chairman of the Board Rev. Imre Bertalan The White House Internship by Ameritech Zoltán Hargitai of Cleveland, Ohio, wrote the following about his experience as a White House intern: The insights I received being so close to the functions of the Executive Branch of government had significantly enriched my knowledge... and awareness to become a more productive member of the Hungarian American community as a whole. Two outstanding candidates, Ms. Melissa Byrd of Lebanon, Ohio, and Ms. Christina Stacey from Newcastle, Pennsylvania, have been nominated by the Coalition and were accepted by theWhite House for the Spring 1998 and Fall 1997 Internship respectively. Due to the Special grant made by Ameritech to underwrite this program, the Coalition provides a monthly stipend for living expenses to the candidates selected for White House internships. Applications are now being accepted for the Spring, 1998 White House Internship, a three-month session from January through-April. Application deadline at the White House is November 1,1997. Eighth Annual Human Rights Workshop in Michigan Over 30 participants attended the Hungarian American Coalition’s Eighth Annual Human Rights Workshop on June 5-7, 1997 at Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, Michigan. Co-sponsors included the Hungarian Communion of Friends, the Hungarian Human Rights Foundation, the Honors Program of Eastern Michigan University, and first time sponsor, the American Hungarian Federation. Prof. Andrew Ludányi organized the Workshop, and Ms. Krisztina Újvági was in charge of all local arrangements in Michigan. The Workshop’s special guests were Dr. Viktor Bauer, Vice President of the Coexistence Movement, and former President of CSEMADOK from Slovakia, and Mr. Bhuchung Tsering, Communications Director of the International Campaign for Tibet. Dr. Bauer focused on the denial of Hungarian language and cultural rights of the 600,000-large Hungarian community in Slovakia. Mr. Tsering discussed the human rights conditions in the Tibetan region dominated by China. Other lecturers included Andrew Ludányi, László Hámos, Árpád Nemes, and Gábor Szorad. A special feature of the Workshop was a visit to Toledo, Ohio’s historic Hungarian American community in the Birmingham area, including a Congressional briefing by Representative Marcy Kaptur. 2 * Hungarian American Coalition News * Summer 1997
