Leaders of the Hungarian-American Community Attend Inauguration Weekend Events Leaders of the Hungarian-American community joined senior Administration officials and over 500 ethnic American leaders for “An Ethnic American Salute to President Clinton and Vice President Gore” January 19, 1997. The Inauguration weekend luncheon, “A Celebration of the American Mosaic,” was held at the Washington Press Club, and was attended by Hungarian American Coalition members including the Honorable Péter Újvági and Ms. Krisztina Újvági, Rev. Imre Bertalan, George Dózsa, Mr. and Mrs. Zsolt Szekeres, László Papp, Anne Bader, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Koszorús, Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. George Pogan. Péter Újvági, Coalition Board member and Toledo, Ohio, City Councilman, served as co-chair of this event, which was organized by The National Democratic Coordinating Committee. The program featured speeches by Alexis Herman, Secretary of Labor Designee, and Donna Shalala, Secretary of Health and Human Services, both of whom stressed the significance of active participation of various ethnic communities in the American political system. The Hungarian Reformed Federation of America and the Hungarian American Coalition co-sponsored a reception at the Kossuth House to celebrate the numerous contributions of the Hungarian-American community to American diversity. Guests were welcomed by HRFA President, George Dózsa with additional remarks by Rev. Imre Bertalan, Péter Újvági, Endre Csornán, and László Papp. COALITION PROJECT UPDATES Human Rights Workshop to be held in Michigan - June 5-7,1997 The Eighth Annual Human Rights Workshop will be held this year at Eastern Michigan University, MI, on the weekend of June 5-7,1997. The Hungarian Communion of Friends and the Hungarian American Coalition have already committed to serve as co-sponsors of the Workshop and will ask other organizations to provide financial assistance in the form of stipends for participants, as well as for general support of what has become a traditional Hungarian-American project. Prof. Andrew Ludányi and Eastern Michigan student, Krisztina Újvági are planning this year’s program.
