Historie Celebrations in the U. S. Mark the Hungarian Millecentenary and the Fortieth Anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution The American Hungarian Federation: A Gala Banquet will be held on November 16, in Teaneck, New Jersey, to celebrate the 90th anniversary of this organization’s founding, as well as the Hungarian historic anniversaries. AHF will give special recognition to several leaders of the Hungarian American community. The Toledo (Ohio) Hungarian American Community organized a series of events: October 8—the Hon. Peter Újvági spoke at the Birmingham Cultural Center; October 20—Memorial Mass at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church; October 23—a wreathlaying ceremony and a candlelight vigil was held at the Hungarian Flag in International Park. October 25—Hungarian Club of Toledo presented “Lest We Forget,” November 3—bilingual service of remembrance of the Revolution was held at Calvin United Church of Christ. A Jubilee Concert Celebrating the 1,100th Anniversary of Hungary and the Bicentennial of Cleveland The United Hungarian Societies of Cleveland has organized a Jubilee Concert to be held on November 17th at beautiful Severance Hall, home of the world-famous Cleveland Orchestra. The Women’s Orchestra of Cleveland, as well Eric Johanson, Zoltán Marczy and Alex Udvari will perform works of Liszt, Kodály, Erkel and others. Gala Concert in Washington, D.C., Kennedy Center The Hungarian Embassy and Ambassador György Bánlaki have made arrangements for a 1,100th Anniversary of Hungary Gala Concert to be held at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts on November 12. The National Symphony Orchestra will perform under the leadership of Leonard Slatkin. Featured artists include Eva Marton, the Bartók Quartet, János Starker and The Paramount Brass. Minnesota Hungarians Gather On October 27, 1996, Minnesota Hungarians held a special commemoration of Hungary’s Millecentenary and the 1956 Revolution. Box 174 New Brunswick, NJ 08903 Millecentennial Celebration in Seattle On October 23rd, the world famous Hungarian pianist, Béla Siki gave a concert at Seattle University’s Campion Chapel. University history professors, Dr. Tihamér Komjáthy and Dr. Zoltán Kramár, presented lectures about the two historical events. November 16th the Seattle-Pécs Sister City Association’s Hungarian members will cook a Hungarian dinner at the Consulate for the American members and show the Millecentennial video. Also, many households in Seattle and vicinity will show the video and invite American friends for a Hungarian dinner that day. The House of Hungary, San Diego, California On November 9 a Gala Celebration will be held to mark Hungary’s Millecentenary at the Hanalei Hotel in San Diego, California. “New York Salutes Hungary” On October 3 the American Council of the World Federation of Hungarians held a gala evening and fundraiser at the United Nations. The elegant event was attended by over 300 people who watched 12 outstanding Hungarian Americans and three community leaders be honored for their achievements. The proceeds of this event will be donated to three youth centers in Hungary. The Hungarian Club of Colorado Celebrated in Denver On October 27 Colorado Hungarians held “A Commemoration of Hungary’s Anniversaries - 1996.” The day began at Saint Elizabeth Hungary Church with a Mass of Celebration. At 1:00 p.m. a Memorial Service followed at The Hungarian Freedom Park. In the evening a Gala Dinner at the Petroleum Club of Colorado featured Professor István Fehérváry, ‘56 Freedom Fighter as the speaker. San Francisco salutes Hungary at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor On August 18, 1996, San Francisco area Hungarians and their guests gathered for a reception to celebrate Hungary’s 1,100th anniversary. The festive event included a special exhibit about Hungary and was organized by Eva Voisin, Esq., the Honorary Consul and the president of the Hungarian American Chamber of Commerce. June 15th Celebration of Chicago Hungarians 1,000 people gathered at the State of Illinois Building in downtown Chicago to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of Hungary’s founding and the 40th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. The Hungarian Festival featured 30 exhibits and a program in which Hungarian history was depicted through poetry and music. 4 • Hungarian American Coalition News • Fall 1996
