Hungarian American Coalition Winter 1992 Vol. 1, No. 2 Clinton’s Vision for Hungarian/American Relations Mrs. Edith Lauer and Reverend Imre Bertalan Hungarian American Coalition 818 Connecticut Ave. NW, Suite 850 Washington, DC 20006 October 30, 1992 Dear Mrs. Lauer and Reverend Bertalan: I am in receipt of your questionnaire and I am happy to let you know that a Clinton/Gore Administration will work to expand and strengthen relations between the United States and Hungary. In areas as diverse as trade and cultural exchange, we will work with our Hungarian counterparts to help usher in a new phase in Hungarian/American relations that represents Hungary’s renewed status as a fully independent member of the community of nations. Hungarian-Americans have made important contributions to our country, establishing themselves as leaders in every aspect of American life. Your brave support for democratic ideals in 1848, 1956, and the democratic revolution of the last three years in your country of ancestry testifies to your leadership. I have a plan for America that will bring new vitality to our country as we turn our attention to improving education, our healthcare system, cities, and the economy. It is time for us to solve our problems and it is time for us to hope again. My administration looks forward to working with members of the Hungarian-American community as we build our country. We look forward to your support on November 3. Sincerely, [signed Bill Clinton] This was President-elect Clinton’s reply to a questionnaire sent by the Coalition to the campaign headquarters of President George Bush, Governor Clinton, and Ross Perot in order to elicit their views on the policy of the U.S. toward Hungary and the rest of East Central Europe.
