Cristina Sandu et al: The Importance of Good Ecological Status for the Successful Revival of the Danube Sturgeon 23 THE AUTHORS CRISTINA SANDU is a researcher at the Institute of Biology Bucharest, Romanian Academy, with over 20 years of experience in aquatic ecology. Since 2012, she has coordinated the Danube Sturgeon Task Force, a network established in the frame of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region — Priority Area 06 Biodiversity (DSTF - EUSDR PA 06) to foster the recovery of Danube sturgeons. Since 2009, she has represented the International Association for the Danube Research (scientific NGO) in the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River, contributing to the implementation of the Water Framework Directive and the Danube River Basin Management Plan. ALINA DUMITRACHE graduated from the Ecological University of Bucharest, Faculty of Ecology and Environmental Protection, and has a Master’s degree on Systemic ecology and sustainability, University of Bucharest. Since 2006, she has worked at the Institute of Biology Bucharest, her main field of interest being contamination with heavy metals and the hydrochemistry of aquatic ecosystems, especially in the Danube Delta and EMILIA RADU is a researcher at the Institute of Biology Bucharest, Department of Ecology, Taxonomy and Nature Conserva­tion, with a PhD in Environmental Science from the University of Bucharest. During her 10 years of activity, she has taken part in different research projects focusing on macrophyte communities and the phytophilous fauna of the Danube Delta lakes. She has been involved in the organization of different environmental education activities focusing on raising children’s awareness of the importance of biodiversity. DORU DOBRE is a researcher at the Institute of Biology Bucharest, Sulina Ecological Field Station (Danube Delta), with 20 years of experience in freshwater ecology. Since 2006, he has held a PhD in Biology from the University of Bucharest, his main field of interest being the ecology of macroinvertebrate communities and the ecological succession of aquatic ecosystems in the Danube Delta. Besides his research activity, he provides local support for the research and sampling campaigns organized in the delta. Mädälina TUDORACHE is a lecturer at the Department of Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry and Catalysis, Faculty of Chemis­try, University of Bucharest, Romania, with over 15 years of research experience. She has lectured on Immunochemistry and Ana­lytical Chemistry since 2000 (PhD at Lund University, Sweden). Her research interest focuses on the fields of Environmental Chem­istry, Biocatalysis, Green Chemistry and Biomass Valorisation. Simona MIHAILESCU is a senior scientist at the Institute of Biology Bucharest — Romanian Academy, Department of Ecology, Taxonomy and Nature Conservation, with over 20 years of experience in environmental protection and biodiversity conservation. Her main field of interest comprises the assessment of natural resource sustainability, biodiversity assessment especially for species and habitats of community interest (Habitats Dir.), monitoring and managing plans for protected areas, mountain flora and vegeta­tion, plant species chorology, databases on species and habitats. Since 2001, she has been the Scientific Secretary of the Commis­sion for the Protection of Natural Monuments, Romanian Academy.
