A kézirat beérkezett: 2014. január 13-án Comparison of the sensitivity of the mussel micronucleus test and bacterial tests for assessing genotoxic capacity of municipal wastewater Bettina Eck-Varanka, Eszter Horváth, Kitti Andreidesz, Nóra Kováts University of Pannónia, Institute of Environmental Sciences, 8200 Veszprém P.O.Box 158 Abstract In genotoxicity assessment of both individual components and complex environmental matrices, bacterial tests (such as the SOS Chromotest, Ames test, Mutatox, UMU test, etc.) and micronucleus or comet assays are applied. These tests are conducted on prokaryotes or eukaryotes, respectively. Though micronucleus tests have been conducted on mussels since the 1980’s, there is no data available on the comparative assessment of both bacterial and micronucleus assays. In this study results of the micronucleus test using the painter’s mussel (Unio pictorum) are compared to those of two bacterial assays, the Ames test and the SOS Chromotest, in the assessment of the genotoxic capacity of municipal wastewater. Of the two bacterial assays, the SOS Chromotest gave positive result only for the most concentrated sample, while the Ames test indicated genotoxic effect for the lowest concentration as well. Similarly, the micronucleus test showed a clear concentration-response pattern Keywords: municipal wastewater, genotoxicity, mussel micronucleus test, Ames test, SOS Chromotest .
