Abstract: The summer thermal stratification was analysed, temperature and oxygen concentrations were measured in Malom-Tisza oxbow (2007-2010). A stable stratification of the water column was found during the studied period (dimictic stratification) characterised by a high stability score (RWCSmax = 479) and by an anoxic hipolimnion. Development of summer stratification was affected by (i) the fetch length, by (ii) the spring weather which latter determined the depth position of the thermocline strata and the temperature stratification of hipolimnion; and finally by (iii) the summer weather which affected the seasonal and diurnal changes in temperature of epilimnion. Our results suggest that the differences between years in stability of stratification may influence the composition of phytoplankton communities, which is one of the main drivers of water quality of lakes.
