Nagy S. A. - Tóth, A. Department of Hidrobiology, University of Debrecen, H-4032. Debrecen Egyetem tér 1., Hungary Abstract: Keywords: During the hydroecological state estimation of aquatic and wetland habitats we have met several respect systems of value measuring. There is an attempt to determine nature conservation value in the level fixed by the current protection law or order while using a category system - sanctuary like, wise use, economic use - indicates value from the viewpoint of environmental management. If we approach the question from the viewpoint of nature conservation then we have to keep the valid orders of Hungarian Standard (MSZ) in each field of sampling, processing and valuing, at the same time there are more frequent attempts to apply the Water Frame Directive of European Union for valuing good ecological state and good ecological potential. However, diversity of living organisms and variety of their demands have no consideration for the rules applied by human and the values determined by different respects have discrepancy in many cases. In our paper we would like to show that paradoxical situation in the example of tracking the oxygen budget of the backwaters (Hordódi-Holt-Tisza, Háromágú, Szartos, Nagymorotva) located at the southeastern basin of Tiszavalk in Lake Tisza when the ecological state of the water body considered to be the most valuable from the viewpoint of nature conservation was the worst out of the four areas while the ecological state of the water body considered to be the less valuable from the viewpoint of nature conservation was the best. ecological state, value of nature conservation, Lake Tisza, backwaters, oxygen budget.
