Debrecen, HUNGARY Abstract: In spring and summer of 2006 chironomid exuviae and larvae were collected from 27 streams in the catchment area of Lake Balaton. 109 species were identified, among which 11 species proved to be new to the fauna of Hungary. It means that the chironomid fauna of these streams are nearly totally unknown. 21 species were only found as larvae, and 48 ones were only found as exuviae. The species number collected as exuviae were no different from that collected as larvae at the sampling sites. If the samples collected at the same time were taken into consideration, the species richness was significantly higher by exuviae than by larvae. The results show that in the case of fewer samplings the same or higher number of species can be found by collecting exuviae. It suggests that the collection of pupal exuviae should be worth considering in even the sampling protocols of EU WFD or NBmS.
