Van Den Berg Abstract: A common botanical dataset was established containing abundance data of 789 macrophyte species from 313 different lakes from ten European countries. Various common species and genera were identified to be indicative for reference and impacted conditions within the whole Central-Baltic GIG. Macrophyte assemblages of sites do not necessarily cluster per lake type and correspond better to the source countries. Other factors such as regional climate effects and/or artificial effects due to differences in monitoring techniques might also contribute to this effect. When applying a variety of available national methods for macrophyte status assessment, the results produced sometimes differed 1 to 2 full quality classes for the same site. It is foreseen that the intercalibration exercise need to be based on more detailed data considering the seasonal patterns and also the latitudinal differences within the L-CB GIG.
