Water uprush, a peculiar hydrological phenomenon of the Great Hungarian Plain Pálfai, I. Water uprush is defined as a progressive rising of ground-water level, which is sometimes and somewhere rushing up above the ground and mixing with excess water originated from rainfall and snow melt. Through various examples from the Great Hungarian Plain this paper describes the circumstances of water uprush formations. Water uprush is induced under specific relief and geological conditions - by the culminating high precipitations of several years and the decreasing evaporating capacity of the atmosphere at the same time. This paper was presented at a workshop entitled "The role of water uprush in excess water control and landscape management" held on March 10,2004 at the Research Institute for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Irrigation, Szarvas, Hungary, water uprush, ground-water, rainfall, evaporation, infiltration dr., ny. mérnök, az MHT Mezőgazdasági Vízgazdálkodási Szakosztályának több választási időszakon át volt elnöke.
