They are producing a range of bioactive compounds e.g. peptides, polyketides, alkaloids and lipopolysaccharides. Some of these compounds are neuro- or hepatotoxines. Microcystin is a hepatotoxic heptapeptide produced by several species of the genera Microcystis, Anabaena , Nostoc, and Oscillatoria. Microcystin have more than 65 stuctural isomforms, having the common stucture cyclo(Adda-D-Glu-Mdha-D-Ala-L-X-D-MeAsp-L-Z), where X and Z are available L-aminoacids, Adda is 3-amino-9-methoxy-2,6,8,-trimethyl-10-phenyl-4,6-decadienoic acid, D-MeAsp is 3-methyIaspartic acid and Mdha is Af-methyl-dehydroalanine. From water blooming Kis-Balaton reservoir, Hungary we isolated several microcystins (Fig. 1). The isolation and the chemical identification of those compounds was obtained by HPLC separation, MS, NMR and UV spectroscopy. The chromatographic separation and the biological characterization of microcystins were performed with the help of a plant test (mustard), namely the Blue Green Sinapis Test (BGST).
