68 HIDROLÓGIAI KÖZLÖNY 2004. 84. ÉVF. Diatom flora and vegetation of some small creeks in the Balaton region, Middle Hungary Kovács, Cs., Kiss, Zs., Padisák, J. Abstract: The European Union suggests the use of diatoms for monitoring rivers. In the spring of 2002 we collected samples from 7 streams, each belonging to tributary of Lake Balaton. Ordination of the samples by cluster analysis based on diatom data resulted in separation of two basic types of creeks: one of the groups included creeks under heavy human impact and the other contained creeks that can be considered as close-to-natural. The samples were analyzed taxonomically and relative dominance of different species was also established. The dominant species belong to Achnanthes. The Achnanthes minutissima was found in high abundance almost invariably in each river. Thq substrate quality of the river bed and the water chemical parameters had the highest impact on the diatom flora of the investigated creeks.
