'North Hungarian Regional Waterworks Co. West Regional Directorate, Salgótarján 'North Hungarian Regional Waterworks Co. East Regional Directorate, Kazincbarcika Abstract: Six reservoirs belong to the North Hungarian Regional Waterworks Company as follows: Rakaca, Köszörűvölgy, Csórcét, Lázbérc, Komravölgy and Hasznos. Five of these artificial lakes -excluded Rakaca-, are drinking water reservoirs because water treatment technology based on their water: NHRW provides drinking water to the inhabitants of Nógrád, Heves and Borsod counties which are situated in the northeastern part of Hungary. These reservoirs were being built between at the end of the '60ies and '70ies. The water of Köszörűvölgy, Csórrét and Hasznos comes from the snow melting and rainfall. The Komravölgy reservoir is a sidevalley type one, which has got a small watcr-catchment area because of it the water filling happens from the River Ipoly by pumps. Lázbérc Reservoir possesses a ccrtain water-catchment area, it's 218 km 2. Regular examinations are done by the Central Laboratory of the company four times a year. Samples are taken from the whole depth using peristaltic pump from every 2 or 3 m. Our aim was to determine vertical algal distribution of the reservoirs, algal number in chamber using inverted microscope and compare the Chi a concentrations and algal content. To make the results more comparable average samples were used for the determination of Chi a content and algal number. Keywords drinking water reservoir, biological water quality, Chlorophyll a content, phytoplankton, vertical alga distribution.
