Abstract: A method developed for the Galga stream for identifying pollutants in small streams is described At sampling stations determined by the assessment of hydrologic and land use data sediment and water samples were taken The sediment samples were analysed for their heavy metals content and their hygienic state was assessed The elements in the water samples were determined The heavy metals content and the level of pollution of the sediment samples reflected the impacts of agricultural activities and transport in the surroundings of the stream The sources of pollution, which have caused heavy metal concentrations beyond the limit values, were identified.
