C. Müller in the Vienna "Kriegsarchiv") Deák, A. A. Abstract: Following sigaature of the Karlóca Peace Treaty (1799), the clos to 800 km loog boundary was located by a method whidi was unprecedented in history. The Turks and the Austrians havc each designated a boundary committec, which was assigned to idmtify and monumcnt in the üeld the boundary separaiing the two empires, in accord with the principles laid down in the treaty. The true noveKy in the work was, however, not the thorough Celd inspection trip, but the methodical mapping used in identifying the borderline. Ihis was the first occasion in world history, that maps played a key role in diplomacy. The &ects dctected rccently in the Vienna "Kriegsarchiv" carry iniportant information to the scientific community. The bordér survey was, however, of importancc not only to political mf^ping, but has produced new information on hydrography as well, in that the courses of the rivers Maros, Tisza, Száva and Unna were verified by means of a compass, where these förmed the boundary betwecn the two empires. These eflbrts may well be regarded as the first methodical, instrumental river surveys. Keywords: Ilydraulic cnginecring history, cartography.
