Abstract: During the past two decades changes of opposite sign - rising, or dropping - were observed in the mean value of the annual highest ice-free stages on several river gages along the Hungárián section of the Danube. The changes detected remained thus far small enough to warrant no modification of the water levels of 1 % probability considered critical in issuing flood warnings. The possibility of the critical water levels changing significantly over the next ten years already cannot be excluded.
