The decision to irilroduce piped watersupply was taken by the municipality Pest in 1867. The assignment for engineering the project was awarded to the British engineer William Lindley, who was compelled by the lack of funds to abandon the first idea of artificial filtration in favour of wells as the sources of supply when establishing the „Temporary Pest Water Works". The first stage of this project was completed in 1868 and this is the date from which the history of the present Budapest Municipal Water Works is calculated. The new capilal of Hungary, Budapest was established in 1873 by the merger of Buda, Pest and Óbuda, prompting again the construction of the definile water supply facilily, which was completed by the tum of the cenlury to meet the contemporary demands. The water works has developed ever since continuosly to keep pace with the demands. Water is being presently supplied bnot only to the 2 millión inhabitants of Budapest, bul alsó to 20 communites in the area. The water is obtained from bank-filtered wells. A water works treaűng Danube water is operated to cover demand peaks alone. The volume delivered annually is 345 millión m', corresponding to an average consumption of 940 000 m 3/day. The daily peak is round 1 300 000 m 3. The capacity of the first „Temporary Pest Water Works" was 8100 m'/day.
