176 Genotoxic effcets of drinking wator in Budapest Hegedfis, J. Alistract: Samples taken in 1989—90 under Budapest, Váci út 102. from the distribution network were tested for the genotoxic/mutagenous/carcinogenous effects by the „SMART" —Somatic Mutation and Recombination Test—using Drosophila melanogaster. The genotoxic substances in the drinking water were present in low concentrations, but were concentrated at the natural pH by organic extraction (cyclohexane) with one exception, where the pH was lowered to 2. The sample volumes ranged between 6.0 and 20.0 1. Of the test data 42.8% proved positive, and showed thus genotoxic effect. The method applied is a simple one, the data being readily accessible to statistical evaluation and interpretation.
