BARTA E.: Tisza Lajos királyi biztos 341 Lajos Tisza, the royal coinmissioner of the reconstruction of Szeged town after the 1879 flood disaster Barta, E., Mrs. Abstract: Several reports by a number of autliors have been published on the 1879 flood disaster at Szeged and the well eonceived and implemented reconstruction work. Public attention has, however, been diverted during the past four decades — with obvious deliberation — from the key person of reconstruction, Lajos Tisza (1832—1898). The present commemoration was written in 1947 already but no journal has been willing to publish it since. Personages must be appraised by their accomplishments, rather then by historical role played later by their families, or in the light of later political opinion. The work performed, the organizing, managing activity must be appreciated by the succeeding generations. How can the reconstruction of Szeged be recognized over Europe, if we refuse to recognize the key figure thereof? How can we expect accomplishments from the future, if the personalities of the past are forgottén deliberately. Szegeden született és e varos tudományegyetemén szerzett 1947-ben történelem—földrajz szakos gimn. tanári oklevelet. Tanárként működött Szegeden, 1964. évi alapításától kezdve a később Széchenyi Istvánról elnevezett vízügyi gimnáziumban. Az 1970. évi tiszai árvízvédekezésben gyakorlati foglalkozásukat végző diákjainak vezetésével vett részt.
