The tendency of negative changes in the state of our environment motivates the scientific analysis and forecasting of these processes and also the control of their undesirable consequences. The paper highlights on operations research methodology which is applicable to the assessment and management of environmental risk. Following a brief introduction (Section 1), basic concepts of environmental project analysis are summarized (Section 2). Section 3 is the main part of the paper, where several important model-types are presented. Namely, formula (1) gives a general definition of the risk functional, (2)—(3) are cost-minimizing and risk minimizing (verbal) management model forms; (4) and (5) are the corresponding mathematical modells (in x is the decision vector variable, C(x) expresses the resource demands of decision x, U(R(x)) is the utility function). Some stochastic extensions of the basic model forms are presented in the second part of the section, which is concluded by a concise review of solution methodology. Closing the paper (Section 4), several practically relavant application possibilities are also listed. environmental protiection, risk analysis and management, operations research methodology, prospective applications SI PINTÉR JÁNOS 1948-ban született Budapesten. 1973-ban szerzett oklevelet az Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem alkalmazott matematikai szakán. 1973—1983 között az Egyetemi Számítóközpontban, ill. a jogutód ELTE Számítóközpontban dolgozott. 1976-ban (vízminőségszabályozási témakörű) ENSZ ösztöndíjas tanulmányúton vett részt az Egyesült Államokban, 1979—1980 között pedig a moszkvai Irányítási Problémák Nemzetközi Tudományos Kutató Intézetében dolgozott. 1976-ban operációkutatási témában egyetemi doktori fokozatot szerzett az ELTE-n, 1982-ben pedig a Moszkvai Állami (Lomonoszov) Egyetemen védte meg kandidátusi disszertációját. 1983—1989 között a Vízgazdálkodási Kutató Központban (VITUKI) dolgozott. 1987-ben a Delfti Műszaki Egyetem vendégkutatója volt. Jelenleg a Közlekedéstudományi Intézet tudományos tanácsadója. Fő érdeklődési területei: operációkutatás (elsősorban a globális ós sztochasztikus optimalizáció tárgykörei), vízgazdálkodás és környezetvédelmi alkalmazások.
