Similitude and seale-up problems in sludge dewatering Part 1 by Dr. Horváth, I. Candidate Teehn. Sei. In studies related to the dewatering and filtration of sewage sludges, systems of different size are commonly used, viz., Laboratory-, pilot- and plant scale devices. From the literature on the subject it is inferred at the same time that rather little attention has been devoted to the processes taking place in the devices of different size, to their interrelations, to the identical and differring features, i. e., to the theoretical implications of similarity theory and scaling up. It is realized at the same time that disregard of such considerations may be an important source of errors in designing and operation alike. The present paper has been written with the objective of compiling a critical review based on a detailed survey of the literature on the subject, and to derive a method for correlating systems of different size, thus for the solution of specific model-prototype conversion problems taking tlie requirements of practice into consideration. Part I of the exhaustive treatise is devoted to the scrutiny of literature, with special regard to similarity theory and scale-up methods. In Part 11 to be published subsequently the ideas related to the perfection of scale-up methods will be outlined. In connection with the critical review of the literature on the subject, attention is called to the advances of research in several fields of the technical sciences, which are related to the field under consideration. In this the hydraulic research efforts concerned with seepage phenomena, soil mechanics, petroleum production are of particular interest, as well as the chapter dealing with flow processes taking place in porous media in the domain of chemical process .engineering. The scientists working in the different disciplines are observed to take in general little notice of the results achieved in other related disciplines. From the critical survey of the professional literature a few conclusions of general nature are arrived at, concering the practical applications of the modelling methods. The role of geometric, kinematic and dynamic similarity is emphasized especially. Particular significance is attributed to the introduction of initial and boundary conditions governing the process in the solution of modelling problems. Dealing specifically with tlie research efforts expended in the domain of filtration and dewatering sewage sludges, the author arrives at the conclusion that rather little attention has been devoted thus far to the use of theoretically sound scale up and modelling methods, although modelling as an empirical approach has been widely adopted. On rare occasion resort has been made to methods developed in the field of chemical process engineering. The methods involving dimensionless numbers and relationships have been neglected in attempts aimed at the soution of modelling and scale up problems. An approach of this nature will be descri bed subsequently in Part II. Vitális Sándor szakirodalmi nívódíj 1981. évi jutalmazás A Bíráló Bizottság a hozzá beérkezteit javaslatok figyelembevételével az 1981. évi Vitális Sándor szakirodalmi nívódíjat, 5000—5000 forintot az alábbi szerzőknek ítélte: Dr. Joó Ottó és Lötz Gyula: ,,A Zala folyó szerepe a Balaton eutrofizálódásában" c. (Vízügyi Közlemények, 1980. 2.) szakcikkéért, továbbá Juhász József és dr. Bulkai Lajos: „Szűrési sebesség növelése kétrétegű zárt szűrőben" c., a VITUKI Közlemények 1979. 4. számában megjelent szakcikkéért. A bizottsági vélemény megállapította, hogy az elsőként említett tanulmány kimagasló színvonalon, az összefügéöeket sokoldalúan feltárva tárgyalja a Balaton vízminőség romlásával összefüggő okokat és mutatja be a további romlás megakadályozására teendő tieavatközásokat. A másodikként említett tanulmány négy óv kutató munkájának összefoglalása. Ezen túlmenően azonban a gyakorlati tervezés számára is irányt, mutat, s a táblázatok ós diagrammok tervezési ós műszaki segédletként egyaránt felhasználhatók. A nívódíjakat 1981. július 1-én Pécsett, a Magyár Hidrológiai Társaság II. Vándorgyűlésén adták át. V. I.
