Sesja Naukowa : Wysokoefektywne metody oczyszczania sciekow, Krakow 1975. Experiments with new flocculants of raw materials available in Hungary By Tóth, A. —Tóth (Mrs.), E. P. —Dr. PI off mann, /.— Dr. Bulkai, L.—Oláh, J. Flocculants have thus far been applied mainly in the treatment of surface waters, although chemicals are essential also in the clarification treatment of wastewaters if the recipient is a lake. This is due to the fact that the phosphates liable to cause eutrophication cannot be removed from the wastewater by the conventional biological methods of treatment. This, together with the chemical needed for sludge conditioning, calls for ever-increasing amounts of flocculants at the lowest possible prices. Cheap ferri-sulphate can, however, be applied in combination with aeration only, while for lime treatment high doses are needed and, moreover, the resulting high pH must also be buffered, before the effluent is disposed of. For clarilication the simultaneous use of iron- and aluminium sails was found advantageous, the efficiency of clarilication being then less dependent on the pH of the water. For this reason a flocculant was produced from bauxite by acid processing, utilizing both the ironand aluminium content present in the bauxite. The manufacture of the flocculant and the process of clarification have been registered by VITUKI (5). The flocculant can be manufactured also from low-grade bauxite ore, from which no aluminium can be gained by the Bayer process, i. e., such having moduli lower than 7. As indicated by pot-, laboratory- and pilot scale experiments alike, the dosage of crystalline bauxite flocculant is the same as of crystalline aluminium sulphate. The chemical was found effective in removing both suspended- and organic substances, as well as the dissolved phosphate content from river waters, further from the effluents from biological treatment stages (Tables 2. to 5.). Moreover, it proved economical also in sludge dewatering (Tables 6, 7.). At the Budapest Chemical Works a 2 ton experimental charge of bauxite flocculant was manufactured in December, 1975. 3KcnepMMeHTbi no npHiweHenHio HOBOTO cpe/icTBa am OCBETJIEHHFL BOAM Tom, A. —riaAomau, E. —d-p XoificfiMaii, H. — d-p EyAKau, JI. —OAOX, H.
