Cand. of Techn. Se. On behalf of the Trans-Tisza District Water Authority extensive investigations have been earried out since 1963 by the Research Institute for Water Resources Development over the area of the K. IV irrigation system. The objeetive of these investigations was on the one liand to determine engineering and organizational modifications required for improving the operational standard in the particular system of supply eanals[l], and on the other hand, to develop generál principles to be observed during the planning of irrigation canal systems and in the organization of operations thereof [4]. Accordingly, dctailed investigations were eonducted to determine the regularities governing the movement of water in upstream controlled irrigation canal systems, on the basis of which the operation of main diversions can be controlled. This would yield information on the time advanee by which the main diversion must be opened, respectively closed before operation of distributors along the canals is started. The primary objeetive of the present paper is to indicate means for the practical utilization of theoretical results obtained so far in this field [2, 3], The problem is a twofold one. It involves, on the one hand the necessity for developing a ,,control aid" by which -— relying on hydraulie data of the canals — the time advanee mentioned above can be determined in a sufficiently reliable, simple and rapid manner. On the other hand a method must be developed by which — in the knowledge of the time of travel — a „control program" can be compiled in a simple and rapid manner for individual gates. In developing the construction method of the "control aid" the basie relationships of the passage theory [2, 3] have been adopted [Fig. 1 and Eq. (1)] and the necessary advanee times for opening (TV) and closure (Te) were derived with referenee to Fig. 3 in the following form 2.305 T„ = — V - 1.305AT n and T 2 Q n 0.1055 Q o V — 0.894/12', Tn the above equations V denotes one-half of the storage space enclosed by the highest and lowest potential operating water levels over the distance between the main diversion and the section under consideration, while AT 0 is the time of travel calculated for the distance between the main diversion and the section eonsidered for mean channel fullness with the velocitv calculated according to Eq. (5). It was demonstrated further that the advanee times of closure and opening for discharges equal to or graeter than V <?maX = ^ are identieally AT 0, and a rule was developed for determining the minimum Q 0 value (Qomin) to be taken into consideration in paractical ealculations. The "control aid" eonstructed by way of an example, using the above relationships and the eriteria according to Fig. 2, is illustrated in Fig. 4. Practical eonsiderations to be obser/ved in the use of this aid are deseribed subsequently. Problems associated with the compilation of control programs are discussed hereafter. In this conneetion a readily handled graphical method is deseribed, the practical applications of which are illustrated by the examples given in Figs. 5 and 6. The "control aid" constructed in the manner deseribed above for determining advanee times and the method deseribed for compiling control programs were first introduced for practical application in 1964 to control operations in the irrigation system K. IV. Three years of unobstructed operation in this system may thus be regardeil as a demonstration of the fact that the methods deseribed in the foregoing are truly suitable for meeting the demands of practice in all respeets.
