Determination of Surface Layer Moisture Content on Basis of Previous Moisture Conditions L. Szabó The Chair for Agriculture of the University of Agriculture at Gödöllő performed daily moisture content measurements on a fieldplot of 15 sq m area down to 50 cm depth increasing at 5 cm steps, with the aid of a desiccator during the winter 1954/55. (See Figs. 1. and 2.) Having investigated the soil for frost danger and determined the mean volumetric weight of individual 5 cm layers, the moisture content values given by the Chair in weight percents have been converted into homogenous series of data expressed in water column. (Fig. 3.) Meteorological data have been taken from the records of the nearby Meteorological Station. The daily mean values of snow-melt with rega d also to air temperature, have been determined by the Salamin (1956/a) method. Evaporating, runoff and infiltrating water quantities, applying water household investigations, have been separeted into groups of snowmelt and rainfall arranged according to the dates of soil sampling. Meteorological and moisture content data are shown in Fig. 6. The index of soil moisture can be defined by the height of the water column stored in the upper (top) layer moistening during the time of runoff in the catchment area. Thus, on the basis of the data given in the paper, the values of soil moisture index valid for the actual site of investigations may be computed as well as the local adaptability of the various computation methods hitherto applied can be checked. Using Eqs. 1—7., the values of the indices have been determined first. With regard to the relatively small area of the field-plot, the depth of the moistening layer during the time of runoff has been taken as 5 cm Since the indices computed on the basis of the formulas referred to above resulted in values of highly deviating character as compared to the moisture content of the 5 cm layer, in order to investigate the causes thereof, water household limit values of the soil have been determined. Accordingly, complete saturation of the open surface top layer will not be attained even with rainfall and snow-melt, further, moisture content of the soil cannot assume a value exceeding for non-frozen soil 10,5 mm frozen soil 25,0 mm frozen soil melting from above 16,0 mm Taking the above limit values into account, the indices computed using Eq. (21a), follow the moisture content of the soil investigated with sufficient accuracy as shown in Fig. 7. On the above basis, the following conclusions can be arrived at: Owing to the different physical characteristics of the catchment area soils, no formula of general validity can be derived for the computation of soil moistuie indices. Even in case of catchment areas having physical characteristics which may be considered identical, the relationship established for a particular area will yield reliable values for the other only if the runoff time is nearly identical. The value of the soil moisture index will be highly influenced by the regular annual changes of soil surface conditions, but mostly by soil frost. Thus, relationships determined for certain periods will not apply to periods with different characteristics. The soil moisture index for larger catchment areas may also be determined on basis of moisture observations of small field-plots. In such cases a small area of some square metres of characteristic soil varieties encountered in the catchment ' area should be selected. On the same, knowing the average percolation fetor of the unsatured soils and the runoff time of the catchment the depth of infiltration pertaining to runoff lime will be determined. Thus, soil moisture observations of longer duration of these field-plots will yield the indices of moisture content of the various soil types, similarly to the example at Gödöllő. The soil moisture index of the catchment area will be given by weighing the indices mentioned above against the ratio of the soil type area. A könyv első részében általános geomechanikai alapismereteket foglal össze a szerző. A könyv további fejezetei a geomechanika gyakorlati alkalmazására adnak példát. A karszt-jelenségekkel kapcsolatos kérdések tárgyalása a geomechanika műszaki-földtani vonatkozásai, a hidrogeológiai, bányaföldtani, és teleptani kérdésekkel kapcsolatos geomechanikai vizsgálatok ismertetése mind hozzájárulnak ahhoz, hogy a gyakorlati feladatok során jelentkező geológiai problémákat mechanikai szemléletből kiindulva oldjuk meg. Az elméleti kérdések világos tárgyalása, a jól megválasztott gyakorlati példák nagy száma, az ábrákon bemutatott jellegzetes hazai szelvények mind elősegítik azt, hogy a könyv nemcsak a geomechanika elméletének ismertetését szolgálja, hanem a mérnökgeológiai vizsgálatokkal kapcsolatosan gyakran forgatott kézikönyvvé is váljon.
