S. S. de Finály: New bitter water wells of the Erzsébet saline bath in Budapest

New bitter water wells of the Erzsébet saline bath in Budapest. By Chem. Eng. S. S. de Finály. (Paper of the Royal Hung. Chemical Institute and Central Experiment Station, Budapest. Director: Dr. A. Zöhls.) The Erzsébet saline bath lies about 3 kilometers far of the river Danube on the plain at the foot of Mount Sashegy. The bitter water wells of this bath are known more than 80 years ago and it was stated that their bitter water was used already in the year 1853. both for drinking cures and for healing baths. The present directors of the bath affirm that for the time being 19 wells produce the bitter water used in their plant amounting to a quantity of 20,000 liter in an hour. The water of seven wells (that of the wells Szent István, Deák Ferenc, Heinrich, Hunyadi I., Széchenyi, Hildegarde and Hunyadi II.) was years ago mixed up and sold as Király bitter water. Now the water of the wells is not used at all for dirnking. The new bitter water wells are located on the field lying southeastly of the central bath building on the other side of the Tétényi street. The wells are 550 centimeters deep, their diameter being 200 cm. As regards the aggressivity of bitter salts against concrete the wells were lined with tuff stones of Nagytétény which material — as the experiences show — quite well resists to the aggressive action of various sulphuric salts. The water level within the wells was 110 cm deep of the surface. The examined two wells are about 10 meters far from each other. The chemical investigation of the water samples taken of the wells was made with the methods usual. I can mention that the water of the „Kísérleti Kút" was at the time of the investigation turbid thus the water was filtered off the suspended colloidal matter. The numeric data of my analyses are as follows: 1. Data of the water of the „Kísérleti Kút" (Experimental well). Hidrológiai KözlOny XIV. 11
