HIDÁSZ ALMANACH 2005 Beharangozok main rivers. At the same time, historic structures - among them the beautiful old bridges over the Danube in Budapest - require conservation. Thus the challenge for the future is to find the best structural answer to ever increasing functional demands including the new demands of this age, while at the same time respecting the existing historic structures. Today structural engineers are faced with many questions. How to modernize an old structure: refurbish or demolish and rebuild? How to refurbish without interfering with function? How to achieve reduced maintenance costs? How to maintain the important aesthetical values in the process? Globalization is already strongly influencing the activities of structural engineers. For example, since Hungary has recently become a member of the European Union, this has provided new conditions, opportunities, and challenges for the whole of the country and thus for structural engineers as well. For structural engineers these challenges include the development and application of common design standards, joint efforts to design safe civil engineering structures against accidents and intentional attacks, the application of internet- based design technologies, etc. The solution methods and tools that structural engineers employ are changing rapidly, along with the materials and constructional technologies that structural engineers must use. Society's demands on tomorrow's structural engineer are many, and we look forward to discussing these with you in Budapest in September 2006.
