In the last years Eger became an outstanding acropolis of Rock & Roll, aknowledged abroad too. It has already become a tradition that in spring international competitions are organized here. Since 1990 the General Assembly is the leading authory of the town. It is in the eclectic building on Dobó Square that the deputies pass their resolutions, the result of which is that possibilities are continuously opening to enable the development of cultural life and tourism. From near the Town Hall, when the night falls, a marvelous sight discloses itself to the guests, the Castle, the Minorite Church in radiant floodlight, the „small” Dobó Square with its many restaurants with nice terraces spread a genuine „Mediterranian” atmosphere. * * * Eger is not only a baroque town, it is also the town of grapes and wines. The restaurants serve the food specialities of the region, those of the Hungarian cuisine but also those of the excellent classical cuisine. Fried frog’s leg was always considered a delicacy in Eger and it can still be found on the menu cards of the restaurants of the town. Lamb is prepared during the Easter holidays and mutton is traditional at the vintage time. Trout (being brought from the breeding place in Szilvásvárad) is on the menu cards all year round. Our game dishes are famous too, such as: -wild boar soup with sour cream, pörkölt of wild piglet stewed in red wine, hunter’s roast with forest mushrooms. The pastries of the region revive tastes of old times. The choice and products of our confectioner’s shops satisfy the highest demands. Tepélypuszta is a hunter’s paradise with delicious food of game, possibilities of hunting and riding. The vicinity of the Tisza bank gives you the possibility of getting to know our fish dishes. The wines of Eger, Bull’s Blood, Italian Riesling, Maiden of Eger and Muscatel go well with the mentioned courses. Wine was always dominant in the life of Eger and the town knew how to protect its products. The order of the year 1480 interdicted that wine from other parts be brought by the merchants to Eger. The wine-carts in front of the town gates were watched over by the town, and the merchant coming from other places could drink only the wines of Eger. Justly, of all wines of our town, the Eger Bull’s Blood is the most famous. I 15
