GÉZA GÁRDONYI MEMORIAL MUSEUM The author lived here between 1897 and 1922. It was here that he wrote many of his works, including " Egri Csillagok " ( " Eclipse of the Crescent Moon " ). This historical novel describes the wars against the Turks during the sixteenth century. From the hall onwards everything is devoted to Gárdonyi's work. In his bedroom all the furniture is in its original position. It was at the small carved writing table that Gárdonyi wrote " Egri Csillagok". The paintings, the landscapes fixed on to his school slate bear witness to his love of painting. The brownness of the study walls is evidence of Gárdonyi's passion for smoking. The roof lights were a necessary light source as the noise outside meant that the shutters had to be kept shut all day. As Gárdonyi had nigh on ten thousand books, the exhibition on display is constantly being changed. When looking at his writing desk it is clear how much fascinating work he undertook. One can also see the cimbalom which belonged to Pista Dankó, leader of the Szeged gypsy band. In the glass showcases you can also see examples of Gárdonyi's secret script. Address: Eger, Gárdonyi Street 28. Open: 9 am - 3 pm. November 1st February 28th, 9 am - 3 pm. Closed on Mondays. HEVES COUNTY AND EGER IN THE 18-19. C. In the courtyard of the old County Hall stands the county gaol designed by Josef Ignaz Gerl. It was originally built between 1761 and 1765, the upper storey being added later. The original prison cells surround the central chapel. They now house displays showing the most characteristic aspects of the local economy (winemaking, craft industries, trade), lifestyles in a few selected areas (urban and peasant households, personal health) as well as architecture, sculpture, painting and the applied arts in the period following the Turkish withdrawal. Of particular interest are the baroque exhibits, especially the devotional paintings with their richly ornamented metal frames made expecially for the religious orders. One can also see the products of the glassworks at Párád and the ceramics workshop at Bélapátfalva. One can also visit the Heves county swimming and waterpolo exhibition in the same building. Address: County Hall Courtyard, Eger, Kossuth Street 9. Opening times: April 1st October 31st, 9 am - 5 pm. Closed on Mondays. THE PALÓC FOLK ART EXHIBITION The exhibition focuses on the folk art of the Palóc ethnical group. The most beautiful carved wooden items are the work of shepherds. Palóc folk art also has a long tradition in weaving. The woven designs are of great simplicity. The finest examples of Palóc embroidery can be seen on the patterned sheets, bedspreads and satchels. Of all the clothing which was embroidered as part of the traditional Palóc costume it was the bridegroom's shirts and women's blouses and aprons which were decorated most extensively. Skilled practitioners made the outer garments, embroidered frize-coats and sheepskin waistcoats. Within the context of a wedding procession and dressed in the rich and varied folk costume, participants would present the characteristic intricately decorated nuptual loaf. The wine mugs from Mezőcsát and Tiszafüred stand out beside the more simple everyday folk earthenware. The painted furniture found in Palóc peasant houses, the home sown embroidery, as well as the woven bedsheets and coloured plates, refer to religious paintings and reprints of popular oil paintings. Address: Eger, Dobó Square 6. Opening times: April Is1 October 31st, 9 am - 5 pm. Closed on Mondays. This leaflet was published with the help of the National Cultural Foundation ( Nemzeti Kulturális Alap) and the Office for Touristic Trends (Turisztikai Célelőirányzat) TELEKESSY PHARMACEUTICAL MUSEUM The pharmacy was founded by the Jesuits in 1713 when Bishop István Telekessy donated a house belonging to the order for that purpose. It moved to its present site in 1900 where it functioned as a pharmacy until 1968. The museum was opened in 1987 and fitted out with restored furnishings. The furniture, made of oak with baroque rococo detailing, was purpose-built for the original Jesuit pharmacy in 1745- 46. Bishop Telekessy's coat of arms can be seen on the breastwork of the glazed table. The receptacles, made in Holies, embellished with the Telekessy coat of arms, also belong to the eighteenth century decor. Wooden jars can also be seen which belong to the original pharmacy.
