The Ugly Wife from Celtic Legend adapted by Julia Dawson 107th Szakközépiskola, Nyíregyháza Summary: The play starts with a group of students in the common room of a student's hostel. They are bored until one of them gets the idea to perform a play. They decide to do a King Arthur tale called "the Ugly Wife." King Arthur is sent on a quest by the Black Knight who is under the spell of Queen Morgana, the evil witch. He has to find out "what it is that women most desire in the world." He sets off on his quest with his nephew, Sir Gawain. They travel for a year asking every woman until on the last day they come across an ugly woman. The ugly woman claims to know the question and answer, but will tell King Arthur only if she can have Sir Gawain for her husband. Sir Gawain agrees and hence King Arthur's quest is complete, but the marriage must still take place. In the marital chamber Sir Gawain breaks down and confesses to his new wife that he thinks she is old, ugly and of low birth. She replies that these things surely aren't important. Sir Gawain agrees and is shocked to discover that his wife was also under the spell of Morgana. She is in fact young, beautiful and intelligent. The play ends back in the common room where the students decide to perform the play at school. —The End —Cast— Narrator/Merlin... Grunda Agnes Extras...
