A smaller number of wine cellars in Eger can be found on the area of the middle age town once surrounded by a wall, but most of the cellars are located on the outskirts of the town. Throughout history, different kinds of cellar have been built. The formation of cellars showed social and economic divisions, too. “Tithe cellars” were common between the 11th and 13th centuries. They were owned by the clergy. As the seat of the bishopric was in the castle, wine was stored in tithe cellars. Cellar building cellars stopped during the Turkish occupation, but in the 18th century it restarted in several areas of the town, boosted by the fame of Eger wines and by the reestablishing of viticulture.
