The curative waters of the region have been known since the 15th century. During the Turkish occupation several public baths operated in the town. Of these the recently rebuilt Turkish Bath, also known as the Bath of Arnaut Pasha, located in the middle of a beautiful park full of protected trees and plants, invites those yearning for rest and relaxation with its six pools of different sizes and with different waters. The average temperature of the city is 10.1 °C. Summers are hot, autumns are diy and pleasant, winters are cold but not severe. The yearly amount of precipitation is 600 mm, the number of sunny hours is 1990. In addition to the city’s historical monuments and sights, annually organised programme series welcome those visiting Eger. These programmes include open-air festivals, concerts, and folk and modern dance performances. When leaving the town of Eger in the northern direction, one can explore the romantic regions of the Mátra and Bükk Mountains either on foot or by bicycle. The highest point of Hungary, the 1,014 meter high Kékes, is also located here in the Mátra. Beautiful ponds and meadows to be discovered, fortresses representing times long gone and tiny villages attract lovers of nature. Those heading towards the south will also find several experiences. The villages along the River Tisza, as well as Tisza Lake provide possibilities for relaxation for representatives of all ages. Swimming, kayaking, canoeing, water-cycling and water-skiing are all possible at the nicely built open-air swimming pools. Those looking for peace and quiet should row further, to more secluded areas.
