Horsemanship in Hungary

The Chronicles claim that the first stud was established by Prince Árpád, the leader of the Hungarian settlers in the Carpathian Basin, in the IXth century. Although what is known as the original Hungarian horse, obviously came from Asia — with the Hungarian tribes —, and these horses continued to be bred up to the Turkish wars in the middle of the XVIth century. Then the Turkish horse predominated and that, in turn, was followed by the Spanish horses, highly esteemed by Prince Rákóczi in the XVIIIth century. The English bred horse, along with horse-racing was introduced in the early XIXth century by Count István Széchényi in Hungary.
