Internationally successfull drivers H.R.H. The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh ( Great Britain) The Prince Philip, husband to Elizabeth II. Queen of Great Britain, has been chairman of the International Equestrian Federation for 1969. That he became a carriage driver is due to pure chance: for if he had not been compelled to break off with polo playing following a fracture of his wrists, he might never have become acquainted with this superb sport. The idea to mount the driver’s seat came in the late sixties while he was busy working out the rules for this youngest of equestrian sports... ,At first, driving was a very difficult job, but it also brought enormous pleasure; what made me especially happy was the fact that I could continue working with horses,’ The Prince Philip is the only one among the chairmen of international sports federations to be an active sportsman himself, moreover, one who participates in the international competitions of his field, and with significant successes at that. He won his first medal at the World Championship in Kecskemét, Hungary, in 1978, as a member of the British team that got the bronze at the races. That he did not give up, although his carriage overturned at the third obstacle of the Marathon only gives more glamour to that bronze medal of his. In 1979 and 1980, he came second at the international competition in Windsor, on the traditional park’s tracks. At the 1980 World Championship he also competed on home grounds: Windsor hosted the championship it that year. A clear indication of his improving performance: he managed very fine at the Marathon and, when the results of the team events were announced, he was not. there to hand over medals in the capacity of Chairman of the F.E.I. but was awarded a gold medal, as a member of the victorious British team. His best individual result so far was achieved in Apeldoorn in 1982, where he came sixth at the World Championship, outriding and outmatching many excellent competitors. Apeldoorn added a new bronze medal in team events to his collection. The Prince Philip has got off to an excellent start in 1984 year’s tournaments, securing himself the seventh position at the Windsor races in May. Tjeerd Velstra ( Netherlands ) The excellent Dutch driver, Tjeerd Velstra holds his title of world champion. He came to like the sport in the saddle, and participated in show-jumping competitions.
