Goethe A fiatal Kepes 1930-ban elindult Becsen át Berlinbe, hogy megszabadulva a húszas évek Magyarországának kevés reménnyel kecsegtető művészeti életének lehetőségeitől, olyan közegbe kerüljön, ahol a korszerű művészeti feladatokat korszerű látással, korszerű nyelven és korszerű eszközökkel lehet megvalósítani. Kétségek nélkül hitt a világot átépítő feladatok szükségességében és erősen bízott abban, hogy az új építésében a teremtő képzeletnek és a művészi érzékenységnek fontos szerepe lehet. Pályájának ebben az időszakában szemléletét az orosz avantgárd rajongó tisztelete és az életet ábrázoló új technikák, a film és a fotó iránti majdnem vak bizalom jellemezte. A művészi jövő számára a filmjövővolt, művészi nyelvének a filmnyelvet tekintette. Képalkotásában nagy szerepet kapott a fény kutatása, a fotográfia. Eleinte a kamera lehetőségei, később a fénnyel történő képalakítás - kamera nélkül - izgatta képzeletét. Kepes szavaival „a formai forradalmak, a formákkal és a technikával való játékos szeretkezések ideje volt ez”. “Art is another nature; it is also mysterious but still it is more comprehensible as it comes from the intellect. ” J. W. Goethe In 1930, after being freed from the rather hopeless way of life so typical of Hungarian artists in the 1920s, the young Kepes left for Berlin via Vienna. He wanted to reach such a /w/Z/iz/where the modern artistic challenges could be solved by up-to-date vision, in a sophisticated language, and with the help of new means. He had no doubts in believing in the necessity of the task to transform the world and he was convinced that the creative imagination and artistic sensitivity had a vital role in creating something new. In this period of his career his artistic approach was primarily influenced by the enthusiasm and respect he felt towards the Russian avant-garde and also by an almost blind faith in new techniques depicting life, i.e., the film and the photo. For him the future of art was the film, he considered the language of film as his own artistic means. The research in light and photography played a major role in creating his images. At first he was inspired by photography, by the creation of images without a camera. Using Kepes’s own words: "This was a time for the revolutions of the form, fora playful iovemaking’ with forms and techniques. ” 6
