The Catholic church is well worth seeing. It was built largely in Baroque style in 1771, but the choir and parts of the main doorway are Gothic. The wooden figure supporting the pulpit was carved in the 18th c., and the Baroque town hall dates from the same period. Heves has become known at home and abroad for its handwoven fabrics and for its water melons. The open-air baths, fed by thermal springs, contain iodine and have medicinal properties. TARNAMÉRA Although referred to in a document of 1365, Tárnáméra was deserted during the Turkish period and not resettled until the 18th c. The Baroque Almásy Chateau, built in 1770, has some fine frescoes. Also in Baroque style are the statue of St John of Nepomuk on the bridge over a backwater of the Tarna Brook, and the Catholic church. There are open-air baths with thermal waters In the chateau grounds. ERDŐTELEK A village dating back to the Middle Ages, Erdőtelek’s Catholic church was built in 1748-1752, and has notable Baroque altarpieces. The late 18th c. chateau was built by János Buttler, commander of Eger Castle, and gained the Zopf (Louis XVI) style seen today in 1782. Next to it is a 17-acre arboretum with 800 species of tree. POROSZLÓ The place was inhabited in the Stone and Bronze ages, and Important in the Middle Ages: in 1445 Poroszló gained the right to hold a market and collect customs and ferry dues. However, the earthworks and Benedictine monastery were destroyed under the Turks in the 17th c. The sights include the Reformed and Catholic churches, and next to the council offices a museum of local rural life in a fine 150-year-old house. On the puszta around the village there is a stud farm and a bird sanctuary. The River Tisza and Lake Tisza nearby offer excellent fishing. SARUD This typical village by the River Tisza is ideal for people looking for quiet waterside recreation and camping. Visitors can also admire the old peasant cottages and the charming church in the old village, of which the first written record dates from 1227. TISZANÁNA This village a few miles from the River Tisza has two Baroque churches. The older is the Reformed church, built about 1750, although parts date from the Middle Ages. The Catholic church (1784-1788) is notable for its fine altars, pulpit and font. The nearby river offers good bathing and angling, and the woods and meadows are full of game. KISKÖRE The village is by Lake Tisza, which was formed when the River Tisza was dammed for a hydroelectric plant. There are developing resort facilities at the lake, which has an area of 127 sq. km and a volume of 400 million cu. m, including good beaches and opportunities for water sports. The islands are nature reserves. The lake has good stocks of fish for anglers, and the surrounding woodlands offer good hunting. RC Church ■ Röm-kath.
