To the delight of ornithologists and birdwatchers, this area now has a bird-life unique in Europe. Many species have settled in this “aquatic oasis” undisturbed by man, and migratory birds have also discovered it as a place where they can rest in safety. A number of heron species nest on the clumps of reed above the surface in sheltered clearings deep in the reeds or on the branches of dead trees. Often 400 to 500 blackheaded gulls nest on large patches of flotsam, while the cautious grey-lag geese can be spotted around dawn. A big cormorant, its wings spread out, sits silently watching, while a snow- white egret flies like a veil of silk carried on the wind, and a shimmering blue and green kingfisher darts through the air. A black stork steps with dignity, while the saker guards its nest. Lake Tisza £ TISMtO by Program Plusz Kiadó
