The bathing-culture of the town dates back to the Middle Ages, its medicinal waters are known all over the world. In the 16th—18th centuries also the Turks established public baths and the remainders of these can be found also today in the town. The wine-growing of the environs of Eger is very famous. The grapes of which the well-known Bull's Blood, Medoc Noir and Egri Leányka (Maiden of Eger) are produced are grown in these vineyards. The wines are stored in cellars built underneath the town and extending to a length of 130 km in total. In the very vicinity of Eger there are situated many beauty spots. First of all we have to mention the Lake of Felsőtárkány and its lovely environs, the forests of Szarvaskő, Bélapátfalva and Szilvásvárad. In Szarvaskő the ruins of an ancient castle built in the 13th century can be seen and near Bélapátfalva there are situated the ruins of a church built in 1232 in Romanesque style and the remains of a monastery. Szilvásvárad and the Szalajka-Valley with its picturesque landscapes, the museums, the possibilities of hunting and skiing attract many visitors in summer and in winter respectively. The vast plateau at a height of 800 m above sea-level and twenty-three peaks rising to about 900 m above sea-level are an excursion centre in the Bükk Mountains. Riding in Szilvásvárad can be assured by the Tourists’ Office of Heves county. Bükkszék, where the famous Salvus mineral water has its source is but 24 km off Eger. Its swimming pool fed by this mineral water is much in favour. The largest settlement of the Mátra Region is Gyöngyös. It is called not only the town of good wines but also the town of fire because fire destroyed it seven times. This is the reason why monuments of early times are so rare here. One of its buildings of value is the Orczy-Palace which houses the Mátra Museum. The Franciscan church a mixture of Gothic and Baroque style situated on the Nemetz József tér (square) and the St. Bartholomew church on the Szabadság tér (square) are worth seeing too. From Gyöngyös a good highway leads to the resorts of the Mátra. Mátrafüred can be reached by a narrow-gauge railway too. Since the turn of the century Mátrafüred is a favourite recreation resort. Going on northwards the tourists can admire the lovely environs around the little pond called Sóstó. Near there stands a look-out tower from where the panorama is marvellous. Not far off we can find Mátraháza, one of the most frequented resorts. It is situated at a height of 700 m above sea-level. The biggest ski- jump and ski-track in the country were established here. It is the most suitable region for skiing in the country. At a distance of 3.5 km from here rises the highest peak of the country, called Kékestető (1015 m). Since the climate is suited to medical treatment a sanatorium was established here. Galyatető at a hight of 950 m above sea-level is the highest spot in Hungary. On account of its good climate, its scenic beauty and winter-sports many visitors come to see this beautiful spot throughout the year. Wandering northwards, passing by the observatory on Piszkés-tető we reach Mátra- szentimre at a hight of 800 m above sea-level. It is the village situated highest in the country. The climate is also here suitable for recovery. At a distance of thirty-two kilometres off Eger and thirty kilometres off Gyöngyös in the northern part of the Mátra Mountains there is situated a charming, well-known health-resort Parádfürdő. The place is well-known for its medicinal waters. It is frequented since two hundred years by those who need recovery and recreation. In the former Károlyi-Palace there is a school health-resort. The stable of the Károlyi estates, called “cifra" istálló, houses a coach museum worth to visit. The Palóc Museum in the village Párád is very interesting too. Parádsasvár a lovely small settlement at the western end of the Parád-Valley should be visited too. The glass factory of the village was established over two hundred years ago by Prince Ferenc Rákóczi II. The products of this factory and the medicinal water of “csevice” source as well are well-known, the glass-ware even abroad. We firmly believe that this short information will prove that this beautiful and reach region ist most suitable for recreation and for convalescence and none of our visitors will be disappointed.
