Eger, the city of wines Bishop Barkóczy’s economic policy, due to which wine­making increased, the market for wine was created, stepped up cellar building, since suitable storing places were needed. In the north-west of Eger, cellars carved into tuff line behind the houses. This area is known as Verőszala and Árnyékszala. In the direction of Ostoros, near the steep road cellars can be found. The name of the area, Kőporos (sandstone powder) refers to the material once produced there, and used for cleaning pots. In the direction of Andornaktálya, near the busy Kistályai Road, in three valleys opening from there, cellars were made in the 19 and 20 centuries. The area got its name after a village which was destroyed during the Turkish times. In the direction of Kerecsend, driving out of town to Budapest, one can find the Kőlyuk cellar line. Most cellars were built in the 1930s. They are the popular “wine-filling” cellars of tourists saying good bye to the town.
