Eger, the city of wines The most significant part of the northern vine-growing areas of the Eger wine region lies in a triangle bordered by Eger, Felsőtárkány and Noszvaj. The soil is quite varied, basically, it can be found on rhyolite-tuff detritus. The best wine-growing villages lie on rhyolite-tuff. 17 settlements belong to the wine region, with an area of more than 14,500 acres. The outstanding professional achievements of three Eger wine-makers have been acknowledged by the Hungarian Wine Academy. In 1995 Vilmos Thummerer, in 1998 Tibor Gál, in 2005 Béla Vincze were awarded “Wine­maker of the Year”. The Eger wine region is the optimal area for quality wine-growing. The fame of its wines is due to the luckily combined effects of several factors.
