The construction of the Kisköre Barrage and of the related irrigation systems was decided by Act No. II of 1966 dealing with the third five-year-plan of the national economy. The barrage serves the following objectives: — to increase the usable water resources by 144 cu. m/sec, and in the more distant future by 175 cu. m/sec with the creation of a storage space of 300 and 400 mlilion cu. m volume respec­tively, regulating the runoff conditions over the affected reach of the Tisza River; — to meet the growing agricultural and industrial water demand mainly by gravity, to supply water to 300 000 hectares of land for irrigation and to 12 000 hectares of fish ponds and in­dustrial installations; — to generate 103 million kWh of power per year; — to create a 120 km long waterway capable of accommo­dating 1350 ton vessels; — to create recreation and sports opportunities on the 127 sq. km large water surface of the reservoir.
