At present 40°/0 of the ten million inhabitants of Hungary lives in the Tisza region and 42% of the total national wealth is concentrated here. The dynamically growing large-scale farming agriculture plays a prominent role in the economic life of the Tisza Valley. One third of the cultivated land of the country can be found here, and 30% of the industrial production originates from this region. Today more than 50% of the total water demand in Hungary and also nearly 44% of the industrial water demand presents itself in the Tisza Valley, while scarcely 20% of the total surface water resources of the country can be found there and most of that is concentrated in the Tisza River. The droughty character of the region is indicated by the fact, that dry periods exceeding 12 days occur every third year in the growing season. At the same time the certainty to meet the water demand is determined by the fact that 96% of the water resources originate abroad. The monthly distribution of the water resources also does not coincide with the water demands because the maximum of the runoff is in March and April while the maximum of the water demand occurs in July and August. The possibilities of the natural water resources was exhausted by the water users in the Tisza Valley in the 1960's. The increase of usable water resources is possible by the construction of a number of barrages and reservoirs, i. e. by the canalization of the Tisza River.
