6 iv» t"J K IVI LE KV K I) ELK vi I resently we aie having difficult times in our country, concerning cultural Programmes. TTie difficulties are not always only of financial nature. The change of regime tries to examine the „traditions” of the past decades and like everything new, and on the own right of the upward striving, it selects very sharply. The thought of the Summer Course in Eger was formulated more than 20 years ago. A past of almost thousand years of the historical town, its rich heritage of history of culture and the fact that it played a path-breaker role among the towns of Hungary in the field of protecting monuments and it still does its utmost for this. The vitality of the town is due to this. It could also be considered as something new at the time because it proved to be the forerunner of the idea of fixing our eyes towards a free, a more open Europe and this fact was of great help in laying the foundation of the international aknowledgement of our endevours. Eger the town of Cartone, Felino-, Kräcker, Fazola and Povolni was certainly enrichened by the colourful, inquisitive audience, by their discussions and their being-together which would suffer no restraint. The topic of this year is quite original. It cannot be denied that the interior of the monuments, their furnishing are parts of our cultural heritage which are not to be neglected. Still it seems that with the hard task of trying to save our ruined substance of buildings, undo- the considerable burden of the protection of these, trying to find a worthy, well-working function for these - the inner values are somewhat thrust into the backgraound. Of course in very many cases there are but few fix points. Maybe this gives our topic of this year its timeliness. The lectures of the course and the discussions as well as the „Students’ Forum” will offer a possibility of analysing the problems and maybe the experience of the richer countries can be useful to us. Eger and surroundings with their attaciiveness are tempting, lovely spots of our country. The beauties of the Mátra and Bükk mountains and very many other touristic and relaxing possibilities are given. This is also a world-famous historical wine region. In our town there are medicinal waters and the bathing culture reaches back to the time of the Turkish occupation. Among others the modem educational establishment in the vicinity of the Public Garden and the swimming-pools, will give you inspiration and the nice atmosphere will enable you to relax and to spend your time usefully. The organizers, the Heves County Branch of the Society for the Dissemination of Scientific Knowledge and the Hungarian National Inspectorate of Historical Monuments, welcome the lecturers and the students of the Summer University, both our old Mends as well as the new participants.
